USA: Daikin Applied is set to introduce its first chillers based on the low GWP HFO refrigerant R1233zd. 

The WLP Aptitude low pressure oil-bearing centrifugal water-cooled chiller and its magnetic-bearing WMT Magnitude stablemate will be available later this year. 

Daikin staff were introduced to the new chillers at a sales meeting in Florida in October and they were a feature of the company’s stand at the AHR Expo earlier this month. 

Designed for easy installation and reliable operation, both chillers, although huge, are said to feature the smallest footprints in the industry compared to equipment with the same cooling capacity.  

Chillers employing R1233zd refrigerant are not new. Trane, Carrier, Johnson Controls York and MHI have all previously introduced chillers using the low GWP, A1, refrigerant. 

“We’re continuing the push to maximise comfort, performance and efficiency while lowering climate impact,” said Daikin Applied executive vice president Kirk Thorne. “The Magnitude and Aptitude chillers strike that balance for engineers, contractors and building owners.”

The Magnitude chiller builds on Daikin’s latest magnetic bearing technology, which eliminates oil, seals, gears and wear surfaces for longer machine life. This allows the equipment to run at peak levels, with efficiencies said to be 40% better than standard centrifugal chillers. 

The Magnitude is said to be capable of performing at full load efficiencies as low as 0.49kW/ton with part load values as low as 0.29kW/ton. Its RapidRestore feature will ensure quick restart times, the company says. In addition, Daikin maintains that the high temperature of water leaving the evaporator make the technology best suited for mission critical applications like data centres and hospitals.

Described as being ideal for comfort cooling applications, such as offices, hotels and stadiums, Daikin says the Aptitude product line uses traditional oiled bearing technology, along with the reliable bench grinder design with one stage on each side of the motor to deliver leading efficiency and performance that matches the Magnitude chiller.
